A Brief Description of Ju-Jitsu
While the most popular translation of ju-jitsu remains “the gentle art.” Another translation would be "the art of flexible adaptation." Ju-Jitsu requires the ability to yield or flow with an attack or offer momentary resistance in order to break the attacker's balance and/or momentum and thereby controlling, disabling, crippling, or killing an opponent. True Ju-Jitsu is achieving the maximum effect with the minimum effort.
Ju-Jitsu was the first Japanese martial art to be widely recognized in the West. Until the 1950s, Ju-jitsu was the art of choice for law enforcement and military organizations worldwide. Ironically, it is the perception of Ju-Jitsu as a sport today that has sparked a new public interest. While many Ju-Jitsu techniques are used in the cross-style tournaments so popular on pay-per-view TV, the chokes and joint locks seen in the UFC and other MMA events only skim the surface of traditional Ju-Jitsu's wealth of knowledge.
At Silent Mountain Martial Arts, the student will learn katas and techniques that can be traced back hundreds of years and can easily be applied in a modern setting against contemporary threats such as guns, knives, sticks, carjacking, single and multiple attackers and many other scenarios. The student will also become proficient with tradtional, modern and improvised weapons.
Ju-Jitsu, in its true form, is not a sport. There are no rules, no concept of fair play, no “gentlemen's understanding” in the application of self-defense techniques. Ju-Jitsu is direct and often times brutal. In the event of an attack, the ability to cripple or kill was and still is essential. While damage to the opponent can and should be minimal, the goal is always to do whatever is needed to survive a confrontation. Ju-Jitsu is surgical violence in its purest form.
